NW Portland Recycler Earns Award for Sustainability at State Conference GreenWay Recycling recognized by the Association of Oregon Recyclers

Construction material recycling has been an intrinsic part of green building since the concept was established 30 years ago. As a reflection of that, recycling credits have been a part of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program since its start. However, there has been controversy around the credits since almost the beginning. To support the USGBC in ensuring the credits are properly awarded, for the past 15 years, the CDRA has engaged the organization’s Materials & Resources Technical Assistance Group (M&R TAG) to provide insight into the realities of C&D recycling.

To ensure the environmental benefits of recycled materials are properly factored into important policy decisions, CDRA members met with US EPA representatives and commented on the agency’s latest WARM Model revision v16.

During its board meeting on October 3, 2023, the board of directors of the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association (CDRA) named industry veteran Terri Ward as its Executive Director and CEO. Ms. Ward had been acting as a special advisor to the board’s executive committee and assumes her new role immediately. GreenWay Recycling operates a successful mixed construction and demolition sorting and processing facility on an inner-city tight, sloped brownfield that the company remediated in Portland, Oregon. We are celebrating our 20th anniversary with a $7 million rebuild, giving us the region's highest recycling rates. We are also the only facility in the area that’s RCI Certified, so we can provide recovery rates for projects to obtain the coveted LEED Gold and Platinum ratings.

As communicated to members on February 13th, the annual meeting will be held on March 15th in Las Vegas, NV as part of the C&D World Annual Conference. The meeting will be held in the Versailles Ballroom of the Paris Hotel, which is also the location for C&D World. The meeting will begin at 9:00 local time. We will begin with an awards ceremony, honoring our Member of the Year and Recycler of the Year. The meeting is expected to conclude at 10:00 local time.

Michael Gross, Director of Sustainability at Green Waste in San Jose, CA

Theodore “Tadj” Ondrick, Chicopee, MA, passed away on May 28 surrounded by his family. He was 80 years old.

Tadj had a terrific work ethic that allowed him, along with his wife of 50 years, Pamela, to build up his father’s construction company, including beginning the recycling of concrete and asphalt more than 30 years ago. Tadj was an original board member of the CDRA and an early inductee into the C&D Hall of Fame. During the early days of the CDRA, there was no stronger supporter of the organization’s mission. The tradition of recycling lives on at Ondrick Material and Recycling through his two sons, Adam and Todd. The CDRA extends its condolences to the entire Ondrick family.
