LEED v5 – CDRA Responds

The next version of LEED—v5—is out for public comment through May 20, 2024. This is an important opportunity and CDRA has pulled together a small working group of subject matter experts to devise cohesive comments on behalf of CDRA members.

Watch your inboxes for more information on how your company can advocate for improvements to LEED that support recycling.

Construction material recycling has been an intrinsic part of green building since the concept was established 30 years ago. As a reflection of that, recycling credits have been a part of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program since its start. However, there has been controversy around the credits since almost the beginning. To support the USGBC in ensuring the credits are properly awarded, for the past 15 years, the CDRA has engaged the organization’s Materials & Resources Technical Assistance Group (M&R TAG) to provide insight into the realities of C&D recycling.

 Committee Corner

Our Committees are where all of the lifting occurs! Check out highlights from their discussions at our most recent meetings. CDRA members are encouraged to attend committee meetings to get the most out of their memberships.

Legislative Committee
At our recent meeting on April 4, Chair Richard Ludt urged participation in CDRA's commentary on LEED version 5 revisions by May 20. Legislative updates from California, Virginia, and Hawaii were shared, along with comments submitted on the EPA's WARM version 16. Shannon Crawford Gay from WM provided insights on engaging policymakers, emphasizing proactive relationship-building. Lessons included consensus-building with related organizations and recognizing local council influence. Read the full update.

Shingle Recycling Committee
During the meeting on April 9, it was noted that a second wave of shingle recycling (or an industry evolution of sorts) is coming. Read more in the full update and don't miss a very special presentation on May 14 at 4:00 EDT: Zane Hartzog, P.E. from the Alabama Department of Transportation (DOT) will present on balanced mix design (BMD) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) from a DOT Perspective.

Membership & Marketing Committee
The meeting on April 24 featured a summary of accomplishments so far this year. Among the highlights, social media has become much more active in recent months, with record followers and engagement recorded. New member recruitment is in full swing and efforts are being made to improve education for new members, to help them make the most of their membership within days, not months. And when it comes to the association’s branding, new websites and a fresh look are currently under development. The committee is also meeting with members as part of a new series of networking Round Tables (we hope you made the first one last month!), and examining how the association can improve the sharing of all CDRA committee accomplishments. We're pleased to share that new members are getting involved in our efforts. Thanks to all who joined us for the meeting this month. Stay tuned for the print newsletter coming soon!

Meeting Preview: Gypsum Recycling Committee
Our next meeting on May 8 will focus on the effort to begin work on a comprehensive LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) for gypsum recycling. With the work already being approved, stakeholders have been hard at revising an RFP, and a review of potential vendors has already taken place. We will share the latest revisions of the RFP and seek comments on the next steps during our meeting. There is still time to pitch in on this project!
